

This course, consisting of 3 modules, has been designed to provide information for nurses on ID and IDA including causes/people at risk of, clinical signs & symptoms, common laboratory tests, treatment of ID/IDA, administering Intravenous (IV) Iron and managing infusion reactions. These modules may be taken separately or together. For nurses involved in the administration of IV iron, all 3 modules are recommended.​

NOTE: These modules provide knowledge. Safe and appropriate administration of IV iron requires knowledge, skill, and clinical judgement (i.e. competency). After completing these modules, it is recommended that you connect with a clinical practice educator or competent peer in your practice setting to assist you develop necessary skills and clinical judgement to administer IV iron safely and appropriately in your practice setting.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
After completing this course, nurse participants will be better able to;

Explain the etiology and causes of iron deficiency (ID) and iron deficiency anemia (IDA);

Identify signs and symptoms of ID and IDA in the adult population;

Effectively screen for ID and IDA in clinical practice so that a diagnosis can be made by the treating physician;

Support the appropriate and effective use of oral iron treatment for ID and IDA;
-
Administer IV iron, including knowledge related to pre-infusion assessment and preparation, administration method/infusion rates, and discontinuation/discharge;
-
Recognize common Hypersensitivity Reactions (HSR) associated with IV iron and differentiate HSR from anaphylaxis;
-
Initiate emergency management of anaphylaxis.
